On the occasion of World Savings Day, a protest action has been announced on Wednesday in front of the Sparkasse branch at Friedensplatz in Bonn. The groups Fridays for Future and Greenpeace, which expect up to 500 participants, will take part. The action follows a call of the organization "Urgewald" and is part of nationwide protests in 32 cities.

Julia Burghardt (23) of Fridays for Future Bonn says: "Savings banks indirectly finance lignite mining and the deforestation of forests. We expected the savings banks to show a greater sense of responsibility". According to Burghardt, research by Urgewald shows that the Sparkassen Group supports coal companies that are exacerbating the climate crisis - for example RWE or Glencore.

The group Fridays for Future from Bonn demands that coal companies should be excluded from loans and own investments. The protest action at Friedensplatz is to begin at 4 pm.
