Drivers can already prepare themselves for traffic congestion on the A555 next year. Bernd Aulmann, spokesman for the Ville-Eifel regional branch of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Road Authority, told the GA on request that a section of the motorway between Cologne and Bonn will be upgraded in 2020.

The actual section will be the approximately 3.5-kilometre stretch between the regional road 184 near Wesseling-Berzdorf and the Wesseling Höhe Keldenich and Urfeld motorway exit. According to Aulmann, various works are planned for the motorway section. For example, a new asphalt layer will be laid, which according to Aulmann, is noise-reducing asphalt. This will be porous and will better absorb the noise of tyres. In addition, noise barriers and a new drainage system will be installed. According to Aulmann, the construction of two new bridges is also planned. “This will be a relatively large construction site,” says the state spokesman.

It has not yet been decided exactly when the work will begin. As Aulmann explained, the detailed plans are currently being drawn up, then the tender will be issued. For this reason, he is still unable to comment on the costs. “That would look too deeply into the crystal ball”. But It is already clear that the motorway will not be completely closed. Instead, “work with passing traffic” is planned, according to Aulmann and vehicles will be redirected onto one of the lanes currently for oncoming traffic.
