August 18–20 Open-air cinema and silent film days: tips for the weekend

The summer weather seems to be returning to the region once again this weekend and with it numerous opportunities to spend warm moments outdoors. This weekend, Bonn residents will go on a treasure hunt at various markets, enjoy entertainment along the Rhine, in the courtyard of Bonn University, at Cologne/Bonn Airport and in churches. In addition, Bad Godesberg celebrates its annual summer festival and the hit musical "Frankenstein Jr." pays a visit to the Bonn Opera House.

BonnLive Open-Air Cinema

They save the multiverse, investigate tricky cases and plan the really big coup: the protagonists of the five films that will be screened on the terrace of the Ameron Hotel Königshof this weekend. Film lovers can look forward to "Sun and Concrete", "The Three ??? - Heir to the Dragon", "Top Gun: Maverick", "The School of Magical Beasts 2" and "Everything Everywhere All At Once" at the BonnLive Open-Air Cinema.

The second weekend of the Silent Film Festival Bonn promises visitors a brilliant finale: six international films from two centuries and a family concert provide varied entertainment. The Finnish film "Before the Face of the Sea" (1926), which accompanies three young students to the mysterious island of Hylkysaari, will close the festival. All films will also be available in livestream.

Frankenstein Jr.

On Sunday, the "Transylvania Mania" from Mel Brook's hit musical "Frankenstein Jr." reaches the Bonn Opera House. Dr. Frederik Frankenstein, grandson of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, notorious for his experiments on the human body, has nothing at all in common with his ancestor. But when the successful nEurourgeon from New York takes over the family estate in Transylvania, his interest in his grandfather's work awakens. Together with Igor and his laboratory assistant, he tries to bring a corpse back to life and encounters similar problems as his grandfather once did.

Young Artists Festival Bonn

The music of Franz Schubert is the focus of the second edition of the "Young Artists Festival". Young musicians from the Czech Republic, Italy, the Netherlands and Germany will devote themselves to the theme of "longing" at the chamber concerts. On Friday, the last chamber music works by Schubert and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy will be performed in the Georgskapelle at the Old Cemetery in Bonn. The concert on Saturday is themed "Cosmos Vienna": the young musicians will play chamber music works by Schubert, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gustav Mahler.

Open-AirPort-Festival

Airfields are usually quite noisy, but this weekend melodic sounds will be heard instead of aircraft turbines on the open-air site of Cologne/Bonn Airport. Alphaville and the Babelsberg Film Orchestra as well as Johannes Oerding will be performing at the last two concerts of the Open-AirPort Festival.

  • When: Thursday, 17 August, 8 p.m. and Friday, 18 August, 8 p.m.
  • Admission: Remaining tickets for Alphaville are available from 63 Euro, tickets for the Johannes Oerding concert cost 68 Euro.
  • Note: The concerts will also take place in case of rain.

Bad Godesberg Summer Festival

In the heart of Bad Godesberg, associations and organisations will celebrate the annual summer festival with residents and interested people on Saturday. In addition to information and exchange, visitors can expect a broad culinary and musical entertainment programme. The dialect group "Sibbeschuss" will set the mood for the musical programme with "Carnival in Summer" and the Bon Jovi tribute band "Bounce" will lead through 25 years of rock history. On the second stage, visitors can expect Willi Wonder and Cologne music from "Kwien - De Stäänefleejer vum Rhing".

Markets

The antique market in Bonn's city centre invites visitors to dust off old art and design objects, in the Rheinaue there is a busy haggling over old favourite pieces, and at "Kunst vor Ort" visitors can get creative themselves. In the workshops at the Siebengebirgsmuseum, they can learn how to paint with wax, do calligraphy or make resin jewellery.
