Spending the summer holidays in motorhomes and camper vans is very trendy during these corona times and it has led to a boom in registration of these recreational vehicles in May.

In that month, 10,460 new vehicles were registered in Germany, which is 29 percent more than a year earlier, according to the German Federal Statistical Office in figures released on Thursday. Because of the measures taken to combat the pandemic, camping vacations are particularly attractive this year.

Despite this, according to the German Federal Statistical Office, the motorhome industry has taken a slight hit because of the corona pandemic. In the period from January to May, new registrations fell by 0.3 percent compared to the same period last year. But this is by far the smallest decrease among all motor vehicles.

The crisis has also affected exports: demand from abroad fell by 19 percent in the first three months of this year as compared with last year. Caravan exports went down from 11,000 to 8,900.

The largest market for German motorhome exports is in France. In 2019, the French purchased 5,400 of these recreational vehicles, valued at a total of more than 238 million euros.
