Adenauerallee in Bonn : Cyclist severely injured in accident on B9

A 62-year-old cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in an accident on the Adenauerallee in Bonn on Wednesday afternoon. The road had to be closed completely in the meantime.

A 62-year-old cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries on Wednesday afternoon in an accident on the Adenauerallee (B9). According to the police, the cyclist cycled – after first investigations as well as witness statements – down the road toward city center along around 12.45 pm.

According to the current level of investigation, the cyclist is said to have left the protective strip on the right side of the road at the height of the Koenig Museum. Subsequently, a 30-year-old driver caught him with his car, which was also heading towards the city centre.

The 62-year-old was thrown onto the car by the collision, crashed and sustained life-threatening injuries. After an initial treatment on site, he was brought to a hospital. According to the police, the driver remained unharmed.

The Adenauerallee had to be temporarily closed completely for the recording of the accident, in which the police also used a 3D scanner to measure the scene of the accident. The investigations of the police continue.

After a fatal bicycle accident on the Heinrich-Böll-Ring on 3 June, in which a 25-year-old cyclist died, a discussion took place about the safety of cyclists in Bonn. The SPD demanded that so-called trixi-mirrors be installed at all traffic lights in the city area. This is a small convex mirror that should make the blind spot disappear. A mirror costs almost 100 Euro.

The opinions about the effectiveness of the mirrors, however, differ widely. Experts don't think much of trixi mirrors, because they don't represent the entire turning process, only sequences. The ADAC warns that situations can be misjudged because of the mirrors.

At the end of September, the Bonn City Council rejected the introduction of trixi mirrors by a narrow majority. The Social Democrats also wanted to introduce additional traffic lights for cycling. The administration advised against the purchase because the maintenance was costly. CDU, FDP and citizens of Bonn considered this assessment to be conclusive. The left, the social liberals and the Greens supported the SPD proposal.
