SUVs in big cities : How’s the 4x4 situation in Bonn?

The share of SUVs in major cities is three times as high as it was ten years ago. This was reported by the comparison online service Check24 on Monday. Düsseldorf occupies first place with eleven percent. In Bonn, the share is not quite as high.

The number of all-terrain vehicles on German roads has grown strongly in recent years - with some significant differences between different cities and regions. As the comparison portal Check24 announced on Monday on the basis of concluded insurance contracts, the SUV share rose from 3.2 per cent in 2009 to 11.0 per cent in 2019. This more than tripled within a decade.

According to the company, the evaluation is based on several million insurance contracts concluded between 2009 and September 2019 via the comparison portal. This shows a continuous increase over the entire period. The largest leap occurred between 2016 and 2017, when the share increased from 7.9 percent to 9.2 percent.

Bonn in 47th place

This means that the sports off-road vehicles that have recently come under fire in the light of the climate protection debate and following a serious accident in Berlin have steadily increased in popularity among motorists in recent years. "SUVs have a high utility value for consumers in rural regions," explained Tobias Stuber, responsible for insurance at Check24. "High-priced models are also regarded as status symbols and are therefore also popular with customers with purchasing power in conurbations".

In a comparison of the individual federal states, Brandenburg leads with 11.9 percent SUV share, followed by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Thuringia with 11.6 percent each. They are followed by Bavaria (11.0 percent) and Hesse (10.9 percent). The lowest rate is in Bremen with 8.4 percent.

Among the 50 largest cities, Düsseldorf has the highest off-road vehicle density. According to the comparison portal SUV, 11.4 percent of all cars insured there are SUVs. Leverkusen and Munich each reach the ranks (behind) with 11.3 percent. Bonn ranks 47th with a 7.5 percent SUV share. There are comparatively few off-road limousines! with 7.2 percent, each in Leipzig and Braunschweig.
