Matthias Stumpff worked as a professional chef in private country clubs in Key Largo and Naples, Florida from 2009 to 2017. There he devoted himself heavily to learning the method of roasting meat in a smoker. Stumpff used this knowledge, enriched with influences from Southeast Asia and South America, when he took over a restaurant in Alt-Kessenich in the spring of 2018.

The restaurateur recently opened “Matt’s Food & Wine” in the Südstadt in Bonn, on Königstrasse. "We don't see ourselves as a classic steakhouse, but as a steakhouse with a personal touch," the 56-year-old explains his philosophy.

The meat is prepared on a lava stone grill

In the restaurant, tables with stained oak tops and chairs made of dark wood and metal are arranged on sleek flooring made of slate. There is room for 64 guests at present, and another 24 seats are available on the terrace in front of the restaurant.

At “Matt's Food & Wine”, whole pieces of meat get a dry rub, and are then caramelized with brown sugar and smoked in a smoker for about six hours with hickory. Then the meat is cut into pieces and prepared on a lava stone grill according to the guest's wishes.

Tuna fillet and burgers are also on the menu

On the menu are also dishes such as Tuna Tataki (blackened tuna fillet on cucumber salsa with Wan Tan chips and spicy mayonnaise) for 13 euros, the Cheeseburger Classic (with beef from the nearby Eifel region, brioche, salad, cheddar) for ten euros, Vietnamese wok vegetables with sweet and sour lime chili sauce, sesame seeds and steamed rice for 14 euros and Jack's Creek Farm Aberdeen Angus rump steak (200 grams: 24 euros, 300 grams: 33 euros) with side dishes like baked potato, grilled vegetables or sweet potato fries.

There is a choice of 16 open wines (0.2l) starting at 4.90 euros, e.g. Pinot Blanc "Im Alten Rad" from Weingut Spiess (Rheinhessen) for 6.90 euros or Tempranillo Do "El Perdiguero" from Barrica Cigales (Spain) for 5.90 euros.
