Attack at Brassertufer in Bonn 17-year-old in custody after brutal mugging at the Rhine

BONN · Bonn police arrested two young repeat offenders accused of brutally attacking a 23-year-old woman and her companion last week in Bonn. The main suspect is a 17-year-old and he remains in custody. The second suspect, a 16-year-old, was released after the initial arrest.

Bonn police announced on Thursday morning that they were successful in their search for two young people who are accused of brutally attacking a 23-year-old woman and her companion on the Brassertufer in Bonn late Thursday night last week. The arrests were made on Wednesday this week.

The 16- and 17-year-old youths were previously known to police as repeat offenders. They are said to have first approached the women, speaking to them. The two women had been sitting on a bench at the time (at the Brassertufer which is on the banks of the Rhine). The youths were accompanied by a third person, who is also known to the police, but was apparently not directly involved in the mugging.

After approaching the women, the 17-year-old beat up the 23-year-old, while the 16-year-old took her purse. It contained personal papers, keys and a small amount of cash.

The culprits then ran off towards the Hofgarten. According to witnesses, the suspects were at the "Universität/Markt" stop for a short time before finally continuing their escape in an unknown direction.

After a thorough investigation by police, the allegations against the youths became more concrete. In coordination with the Bonn public prosecutor's office, the officers obtained search warrants for the parental apartments of the two suspects and carried out the searches on Wednesday. As a result, both youths were taken into preliminary custody.

While the 16-year-old was released after questioning, a judge ordered the suspected main offender to remain in custody. He was sent to a correctional facility. According to the police, both accused persons have foreign citizenships. The police, after consulting with the public prosecutor's office and referring to juvenile criminal law, would not provide further details.

The police investigation is ongoing. In part, the police are looking into whether the youths are responsible for further robberies.
