Accident at Kinopolis in Bad Godesberg Ambulance stuck under the bridge

BAD GODESBERG · Stuck under the railway bridge: Unfamiliar with the city, the 20-year-old driver of an ambulance got stuck on Thursday afternoon when the medical transporter didn’t clear the bottom of the bridge.

As police reported at the scene of the accident, the German Red Cross transporter came from Marburg and was already on the way home, not carrying any patients. It was around 1:20 pm and the young man was driving in Bad Godesberg, following directions from the navigation system when he suddenly became stuck in the underpass at the Kinopolis theater. “I was paying attention to a bicyclist,” said the 20-year-old. He overlooked the maximum vehicle height of 2.10 meters. The ambulance became wedged under the bridge.

The idea to let air out of the tires turned out to be unsuccessful so the police called in the fire department at 3 pm. But it turned out that they didn’t need to come after all because the ambulance crew and police were finally able to free the vehicle themselves, according to information from Nikolaus Ritz, deputy head of the Bonn German Red Cross rescue services, who was also at the scene.

Rail station police and a railway engineer also came to the scene of the accident, the latter inspecting the bridge’s statics. “This is minor damage (to the bridge),” he said. By afternoon, a return trip had already been organized for the young driver.
