Historic film BBC releases video of Bonn from 1949

Bonn · The British network BBC has opened its archives and released a television report from 1949. It shows the former structure of the German parliament in Bonn and photographs from how the inner city looked back then.

BBC has released an old film which depicts Bonn in 1949. It is gray in color and marked by black flecks. With the hashtag "#OnThisDay", the British TV channel BBC mentions the archive film from the year 1949 on its Facebook page.

Among other things, the video illustrates the preparation that was needed to make Bonn the new capital of Germany. On display are the foundations of the later Bundestag (German parliament), which was built at that time. The first Chancellor Konrad Adenauer also appears in the story, as he speaks with a British official.

Bonn back then: Still without the Deutsche Post tower, the city administration building or the "Langen Eugen" (also known as the UN tower). The story contains many images of a city with visible damage from the Second World War: Houses near the Bonn Cathedral with missing wall elements and roofs that had to be rebuilt.
