Australian Singlettes Beehives and Doo-wop in Bonn's Theaterpalast

Bonn · Ready for a little Doo-wop music and a night of soulful entertainment? The "Australian Singlettes" are three entertainers from Melbourne currently playing in Bonn and they have succeeded in captivating their audience on opening night.

Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" was a knockout: Everyone stood up in the packed Malentes Theaterpalast on the B9 to sing and dance along. At the premiere of the "Australian Singlettes" it became clear again how the Belgian theater tent situated between the B9, a fitness studio and a gas station could be transformed into a world of its own. In the coming weeks, the three Australians will be transporting their audiences back to the 60’s and 70’s with lots of Motown hits.

Naomi Eyers, Melissa Langton and newcomer Gina Hogan are good at making fun of themselves. Naomi pokes fun at her age after 30 years on tour. "I'm 25... so somewhere between 25 and death," she remarks. In addition to their colorful costumes, the three of them show off their updo hairstyles, which the English call beehives. "The hairspray puts gravity out of action," said the singers.

They are particularly strong with their banter and joking around. And whether solo, a cappella or in unison - there is a lot of soul in the voices which seemingly effortlessly climb up and down the scales. When one very high note was reached and sustained for quite some time while performing "Lady Marmelade", Naomi received a huge round of spontaneous applause.

The Singlettes from Melbourne look as if Twiggy, Iris Berben (German actress) and Cindy from Marzahn (German comedienne) had founded a girl group. While two of them generously threw marshmallows into the audience, Melissa preferred to stuff them into her mouth one by one. Then came a version of "Ich will keine Schokolade" (I don't want chocolate) in memory of Cologne folk singer Trude Herr.

Not only the Theaterpalast bosses Knut Vanmarcke and Dirk Vossberg-Vanmarcke were thrilled. "I really love it, absolute professionals," said a woman in the audience. This also goes for the live band from Cologne, who also showed their stuff in “Shaft”, with live drums, keyboards, bass, guitar and saxophone.

One can hear many hits from the Ronettes, Abba, Supremes, Shangri-Las and Dusty Springfield. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by Cindy Lauper is a kind of theme for the Singlettes, who always catch people by surprise when they get folks at the tables involved, especially the men. They are contagious with their good mood. Whether or not you are fluent in English is not key, because the music is the center of attention.

The show will be running through Sunday, April 14, at the Theaterpalast on Godesberger Allee 69 – Wednesdays through Sundays. Tickets start at 25 euros and are available in Bonnticket Shops of the General-Anzeiger and online at www.ga.de/ticketshop.
