Sold-out double-bill in Bonn Best choirs on stage in the Pantheon

Goose bumps at the Pantheon: The two best choirs in the West of Germany show their skills in the double concert. In addition to BonnVoice, the choir "Flow" from Aachen was also on stage.

Since December 2018, the Bonn Choir BonnVoice under the direction of Tono Wissing has been proud to be allowed to call itself "The Best Choir in the West" and has since been performing more frequently on stage - in Bonn and beyond. But the competing choirs from the programme have also delivered the finest choral music. Thus BonnVoice invited two of them last Sunday to a double bill, together with the second placed choir "Flow" from Aachen in the sold out Pantheon for both dates.

The guests from Aachen were allowed to take part in the first part of the concert and did so with the unmistakable joy of singing and passion, which in December also inspired via the tv screens.

With its almost thirty members, Flow and choir director Luc Nelissen, who more than once fulfilled his job as beatboxer, provided a good atmosphere in the audience this afternoon. Starting with the Daftpunk medley, which was later also heard from BonnVoice in another arrangement.

The song „Butterfly" was performed a cappella at its finest by the well-known group Rajaton. The singers came across naturally and unaffectedly, and created an atmosphere to which the relaxed and entertaining MC’s introductions contributed also. The two outstanding soloists in "Don't worry" and Josh Groban's "February Song" also received strong backing from their colleagues - here again the warm atmosphere in the choir became noticeable.

Although Flow clearly has a surplus of ladies, the male voices in "Human" and Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" were of impressive strength. The encore, the song "Hymn of Acxiom", which thematized the digital spying of the individual, was a touching success. For this the room was completely darkened, and little by little the singers stood there in the glow of their smartphones.

BonnVoice played the second part of the concert with the familiar mixture of pop and quieter songs. The second part started wittily with "Audition Day", a song that takes up the experiences of last year's competition. With the North German folk song "Dat du min Leevsten büst", the "Air" by Bach and the repertoire piece "Die Gedanken sind frei" there were also songs to be heard again, which are rarely to be found in concerts of jazz choirs. The two Beatles songs "Ticket to Ride" and "Lady Madonna" proved to be perfect songs too. At the end, they sang "Get lucky", which was heard at the beginning of the concert part Flow.

A goose bump moment, which should have happened several times, was unfortunately the only number by both outstanding choirs: "Viva la vida" by Coldplay with the two choirs spread out in the whole hall of the Pantheon.

On July 4, the third-placed choir in the competition, "Die Erben" from Cologne, will be performing together with BonnVoice in the Pantheon. (Original text: Verena Düren Translation: Mareike Graepel)
