Bicycle space at Bonn train station Bike club criticises situation for commuters

Bonn · The current situation for cyclists who want to park their bikes at the train station and the Bonner Loch is unacceptable, criticises the German bike club ADFC.

Since the Deutsche Bahn closed off most of the bicycle spaces near Platform 1, the construction company at the site now removed an even larger area without a replacement.

„A large number of bicycles were removed this week without any prior warning“, explained an ADFC spokesperson. Locks were broken and bicycles got damaged due to incorrect storing. „And the city of Bonn just watches and does nothing, while cyclists get victimised - but not a single car parking space gets affected“, ADFC planning expert Werner Böttcher bashes the situation. The ADFC also considers it unacceptable that more bike spaces get omitted without a replacement.

„It is the city’s responsibility to offer alternative spaces. While the car situation remains unaffected, cyclists don’t know where to lock their bikes to catch their trains and trams. For an allegedly bike-friendly city, this is just not acceptable.“ The situation at the train station isn’t much better. „It is barely possible to lock your bike at the train station.

Neither Deutsche Bahn nor city council have created replacement spaces for the missing area near Platform 1“, criticises Böttcher. Although beside Platform 1, there is a large and unused area currently lying idle. It should also be possible to offer bicycle spaces in the parking lot of the Deutsche Bahn.
