Pedestrian volumes measured Bonn city center nearly as full as in pre-coronavirus times

Bonn · During the lockdown, Bonn’s city center was nearly empty at times, but the pedestrian zone has been filling up slowly again since April. Today, almost as many people are on the move again in the city as before the crisis.

Nearly as many pedestrians are once again underway in Bonn’s city center as before the coronavirus struck. In March and April, it was at times completely empty but since the middle of June, the numbers have almost returned to a similar amount as before the virus hit.

The trend in the number of visitors in the city center is well illustrated by using the heavily frequented Poststrasse as an example: While nearly 925,000 people passed through Poststrasse in the whole month of January, in March it dropped to just under 482,000, and in April the number fell further to around 272,000 people. In May, however, the number of pedestrians rose again quickly: around 623,400 people were counted. In June the number continued to rise with nearly 401,000 people already counted up until June 18.

A very similar picture can be seen on Bonn's Remigiusstrasse and Sternstrasse - here, too, the figures fell to their lowest level to date in April (239,000 and 250,000) and have since risen significantly again.

The measurements of the last few weeks also show that since mid-May, almost as many people are on the move again in the city center as on average in the past two years. On Saturday, June 6, for example, 4,500 people were counted on Poststrasse at the peak time between 3 and 4 p.m.; last Saturday there were 3,870 people during this period. On average over the past two years, 4,600 people were on the move on a Saturday during this time slot.

The figures are based on measurements taken by hystreet.com GmbH, based in Cologne. It uses laser scanners to take measurements around the clock at three locations in Bonn city center.
