Defence with plastic balls a flop Bonn’s royal couple storm the Old Town Hall

Bonn · Bonn’s royal couple, Prinz Thomas I and Bonna Anne-Christin I conquered Bonn’s Town Hall on Sunday afternoon. Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan’s lines of defence had – as ever – no chance.

After the loss of the Old Town Hall, Lord Mayor Ashok Sridharan sulked and withdrew with his wife Petra to the family home to lick the wounds inflicted by Bonn’s Carnival Prince and Princess, according to well-informed reveller circles.

Sridharan had given it his all. During the war of words with the revellers, the Lord Mayor turned out to be a quick-witted defender. The Bonn Capitals team supported the defenders of the Town Hall. However, it soon became clear that their bats and balls were only made of plastic. The City Soldiers discovered the trick, sounded the charge and conquered the Old Town Hall with Prince Thomas I and Bonna Anne-Christin I. At 3.15pm, the Carnival royal couple’s flag was waving on the roof of the town hall and the Lord Mayor capitulated: “I surrender. My army has lost again. Here you have the key to the Town Hall.” Then they inspected the line of City Soldiers together.

The Lord Mayor then gave the commanding officer two promises to keep the whole corps peaceful: he will go with them to a Bonn Capitals’ home game and he will spend a day during the Pützchens Markt fair selling pea soup for a good cause at the City Soldiers’ stand.

The Guard of Honour pampered guests for six hours with food and drink as well as good music. The Guard of Honour’s writer, Wolfgang Stäblein, had engaged the Funky Marys and the Cologne band Eldorado to make appearances on the stage in the Marktplatz. The Cadette Corps also danced for the last time in this Carnival session.

Commanding officer Thomas Janicke was not entirely satisfied with the level of visitor interest. “There are simply too many events in the city area on Carnival Sunday. The Liküra Parade, storming of the Town Hall and the parade in Bad Godesberg as well as the parades in Endenich and Poppelsdorf are stiff competition for us. All those involved should think carefully again about whether Carnival Sunday is the right day for the storming of the town hall in Bonn.” Janicke thinks a possible alternative date is Carnival Saturday, but then in the morning.
