Baguettes, croissants and tarts Café moves into old Schlecker drugstore in Rüngsdorf

RÜNGSDORF · Even though the roundabout at Römerplatz has been completed, the old Schlecker drugstore there has sat empty for a long time. Now something new is coming in its place, an addition for the neighborhood.

For six years, the former Schlecker drugstore on Römerplatz sat empty. But the inventory was still available the whole time. “Closed” signs hung at the two old cash registers. An advertisement stated that more than 500 baby items were being sold at reduced prices.

A special discovery was two old style tube television sets, which used to be advertised for continuously to customers. A sign in the corner made staff aware of the policy when it came to their customers - customer satisfaction was important and everyone should be treated with courtesy.

But now all of these things have landed in the garbage, and the old store will soon get a new life. Achim Carl of Delta Real Estate, who owns the property, took with him a picture of Anton and Christa Schlecker; this picture used to hang in every branch of the now defunct drugstore chain.

"We are glad that something is happening," says Carl. The previous owner didn’t want the property to be used for gastronomy, but that should change now. Carl said they have since received permission to use the space for an eating establishment but were awaiting fire safety code approval. He revealed that he already has a new tenant coming from Wachtberg, who plans to open a French bakery and café at the roundabout in November. He said that it was an independent establishment, not a chain.

The café is expected to offer baguettes, croissants, tarts and much more. After the construction of the roundabout, a lot has changed on Römerplatz. Notably, it has become more of a place to stay awhile. Orig. text: Richard Bongartz Translation: Carol Kloeppel
