BAD NEUENAHR-AHRWEILER · A motorist caused major damage after crashing into the Knauber market in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler early Thursday morning. The 42-year-old man was under the influence of alcohol.

A motorist left a trail of devastation early Thursday morning in the Knauber market in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. The 42-year-old man drove his Mercedes through the entrance doors of the store at around 1:25 a.m., ripping them from their anchoring. He then proceeded to drive around 30 meters through the store.

On his odyssey, the driver damaged Christmas decorations and pushed various shelves full of merchandise to the side, then rammed two cash registers with full force. But even then his journey was not over: He took a left turn and destroyed more shelves before he came to a stop.

Emergency personnel discovered the man next to his vehicle - he was lying in a display decorated with reindeer, Christmas trees, sleighs and other Christmas decorations. The man, who is not in possession of a valid driver's license, was admitted to a hospital with minor injuries, but was able to leave in the morning.

Responding to a GA inquiry, police reported that the 42-year-old had been under the influence of alcohol. He caused property damage in the high five-digit range. A blood sample was taken from the man and police initiated criminal proceedings. Despite the damage, Knauber will open at 9am on Thursday morning.
