Safety for pedestrians and cyclists City council fells peach trees in the Rheinaue

BONN · The city council has begun to fell the first trees in the Rheinaue. In the area between the Japanese Garden and the totem pole, some of the old peach trees were removed.

„The 27 orchard trees are in a desolate condition and may pose a risk to pedestrians and cyclists“, the press office of the city council said in a released statement. The trees will be replaced by newly planted trees. In future, people will not walk or cycle under blossoming peach trees any more but rather under cherry blossoms. The old orchard trees will be replaced by Japanese cherry trees with rose-coloured flowers - the same kind that can be found in the Heerstraße in the old town of Bonn.

The old peach trees were planted in the Rheinaue for the Bundesgartenschau in 1979. Over the years, several had to be cut down already due to their poor state. The main reason for that, says the city council, is the poor quality soil there, which was only filled in for the Bundesgartenschau construction. Before the new cherry trees can be planted, most of the soil will be replaced.
