Accident on A45 motorway Cologne man dies after hurtling into horses

Dortmund · A group of horses frightened by wild boar ran onto the motorway causing a fatal accident.

Several horses which had escaped from their paddock caused a serious accident on the A45 motorway in Siegerland. A 45-year-old man from Cologne drove his car into the group of animals early on Monday morning. Police said the force of the crash caused such serious injuries that he died at the scene. The horses were hacked to pieces by the collision. A second driver suffered from shock when he saw the accident scene.

The horses had escaped from a nearby paddock. First indications are that a pack of wild boar destroyed the paddock’s fence and scared the horses. The animals then apparently got onto the Dortmund-bound side of the motorway before jumping over the central crash barrier shortly before the tragic accident.

The Frankfurt-bound side of the motorway was closed at Siegen for several hours causing tailbacks of up to 15 kilometres. Traffic was moving freely again during the morning. (dpa; translated by Kate Carey)
