Bonn central train station Construction zone fence to be erected on Monday

BONN · The building complex across the street from Bonn’s central train station has been vacated in preparation for tearing down. But the construction area in the middle of the city will present many challenges.

“But it’s all do-able,” said Moritz Tank, project director for property developer, Ten Brinke Group. Some of the real estate on Maximilianstraße belongs to Peter Knodt of the Volksbank Bonn/Rhine-Sieg. “It is definitely not easy for the investor to realize this project in the middle of the city,” he explains. He does not know where pedestrians will be directed during the construction project, which will take place in a very busy area of Bonn.

Maximilianstraße will be reduced to three meters wide

Bernd Gelhausen has owned a CD and record album store on Maximilianstraße for 25 years. He is unnerved by the lack of information received about what will happen during the building phase, which will begin in four weeks.

A GA inquiry at the beginning of the week received the following response, “Construction site details are still being agreed upon by the city, the investor, the community of physically impaired, the city public works and Deutsche Bahn (German Rail). We will inform well in advance when all points have been cleared up.” On Thursday, businesses in the area received a letter from Ten Brinke. It said they would begin building up the construction site on December 19, which is this coming Monday.

On the accompanying plan, a closure between Poststraße and Gangolfstraße was recognizable and only three meters of space was left. Drivers will face very narrow conditions, especially on the left lane of Maximilianstraße to the street Am Hauptbahnhof Baken. And it will be too narrow for garbage trucks which empty the garbage containers from the businesses along that street. Undisputed is the fact that difficulties will come along with the construction zone. During the demolition phase, the pedestrian ramp from the lower floor to the bus station will be blocked. Access to the central train station from Poststraße will also be difficult.

Canal work to come in May

As if that were not enough, canal work will begin on Maximilianstraße in May of 2017 - and is expected to continue until April of 2018. The canal work will be in the area of the bus station and will mainly be underground.

Train station parking garage remains open for now

During the demolition phase, an alternate passage way will be established in the direction of Cassiusbastei. According to current plans, the train station parking garage will remain open until building begins in the northern area. The cult Pizzeria “Cala Dor”, open for 33 years now and nearly around the clock, has found a new home on Wesselstraße, directly across from the Kaiserpassage.
