Once again, Deutsche Bahn is having a crane erected for the renovation of the roof of Bonn's main train station. The roof is under a historical preservation order. Because the crane still has to be secured to do the job, the tram tracks in front of the main station will be closed off from Saturday, February 1 to Monday, February 3. According to the Stadtwerke (municipal utilities), the buses will be directed around the road closure.

In June of 2017, there was an unfortunate incident involving the roof of Bonn Central Station. During demolition work on a nearby building complex, a crane fell over, landing on the roof.

Deutsche Bahn, the Rhineland Regional Transport Association and the federal government are investing around 30 million euros in the renovation of the main station. Completion is expected by the end of the year.
