120 rescue workers Disaster drill at the Rheinaue in Bonn

BONN · On Saturday, the Rheinaue in Bonn will be transformed into a disaster area. Around 120 rescue workers will be practicing emergency procedures here, beginning at 5 p.m. The exercise is expected to last several hours.

People in other countries may suffer from flooding and earthquakes, but Germany is also no stranger to natural disasters. Here as well, people are increasingly becoming victims of severe weather conditions, storms and floods. In order to be better prepared for such disasters in the future, the Rheinaue will be transformed into a site for rescue operations this Saturday.

Around 120 rescue workers from the fire department, Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gellschaft (a German lifesaving organization) , Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund (Worker’s Samaritan Federation), Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross), and other humanitarian and rescue organizations will take part in a large-scale disaster preparedness exercise there starting at 5 p.m. It is expected to last several hours.

The main objective is to demonstrate the capabilities of all rescue organizations participating and to strengthen cooperation and communication between Bonn emergency preparedness units. The four to six-hour exercise is funded by the City of Bonn.
