Roadworks in Bonn Diversions on the B9

Bonn · From Tuesday, traffic will not be able to use part of the southbound carriageway of the B9.

The southbound carriageway of Friedrich-Ebert-Allee will be closed from this Tuesday up to and including this coming Sunday. The diversion towards Bad Godesberg will be along Marie-Kahle-Allee, Oscar-Romero-Allee, Nahum-Goldmann-Allee and Olof-Palme-Allee. Originally, the closure was only to be for two days over the last holiday weekend. The civil engineering office regrets the extension of the closure, which is necessary because the bitumen substructure was found to contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are known to be carcinogenic. Tar contains a high proportion of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The use of tar to build roads has therefore been banned since the 1970s and asphalt is used instead. Building materials containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were found during a routine analysis when the section of Friedrich-Ebert-Allee was being repaired. The road’s substructure now needs to be excavated more than was originally thought and the closure had to be extended to six days to take account of this.

The civil engineering department decided to take this step so that the necessary works could be completed by the end of the holidays.
