Huge fairground on the Rhine Düsseldorf fair opens Friday

Düsseldorf · It’s one of the largest amusement fairs in Germany and it will open on Friday in Düsseldorf. The “Rheinkirmes” is expected to attract around four million visitors this year. Police say security measures are in place.

The Düsseldorf “Rheinkirmes” (Fair on the Rhine), will open Friday with tight security measures in place. It is one of the biggest German fairs with around four million visitors expected. It runs until July 23. Depending on crowd sizes, police say they will have a force of 100 to 300 officers on duty. Visitors will have to pass through turnstiles, some areas will be blocked off and large trucks will be re-directed.

In addition to uniformed police and police in civil clothing, there will be 50 security persons who have experience in crowd management. Security measures are a precaution, police are not aware of any concrete threats. Says organizer Thomas König, “We don’t want anything to take away from our Rhine way of living.” The fair is a “peaceful family fest.”

Filling 165,000 square meters of fairground, with around 300 attractions and food vendors, it is sure to keep visitors entertained and fulfilled. Now, organizers are just hoping for good weather. If it gets too hot, the “Rio Rapidos Rafting Bahn” will provide a welcome relief for fair-goers with some boats getting wet along the way. And the “Piraten-schlacht” (Battle of the pirates), will definitely attract fathers and sons.

Of course there are also attractions for thrill-seekers, the “Predator” ride goes vertical and horizontal in all different directions. And sending riders 55 meters high at a speed of 120 km/h, the “Apollo 13” is also perfect for adrenaline junkies. “Hangover”, an 85-meter tower is very popular amongst visitors, another ride for those in search of adventure.

“Mr. Gravity” is new on the scene for 2017 and the quick rotations here will require an iron stomach. Many fans will get excited for the “Olympia Looping” ride, the largest 5-loop transportable rollercoaster in the world.

Typical for the fair at the Rhine are also beer tents with beers from local and regional breweries, along with music. For a quieter experience, there is the French village and Tirol village, both enjoying huge popularity amongst fairgoers.

The fair opens Friday, July 14 at 2pm. On most of the days, it opens between 11am and 2pm and runs well past midnight. There is no parking directly at the fair but there are five Park + Ride possibilities where buses shuttle passengers back and forth every 15 minutes. Parking costs 11 euros per vehicle.
