Cologne A decline in passengers was registered at Cologne/Bonn Airport for 2019. Air freight traffic also decreased as a result of trade conflicts and a weak global economy.
The number of passengers at Cologne/Bonn Airport fell by 4.6 percent to 12.35 million in 2019. This is a decline of 4.6 percent, according to the German Airports Association (ADV). The airport had expected a decline after Eurowings shifted long-haul flights to other airports.
Freight volumes at Cologne/Bonn Airport also fell, going down 5.4 percent to 799,233 tons. Trade conflicts and a weak global economy had a negative impact here. Freight handling at all German airports fell by 3.2 percent to 4.8 million tons. More than two million tons of this was accounted for by Frankfurt, 1.2 million by Leipzig.
The number of passengers at German airports rose by 1.5 percent to 248.1 million. Overall, air traffic grew more slowly in 2019. European and intercontinental traffic grew, while traffic in Germany actually fell by 1.9 percent according to the ADV.
