Bonn Altstadt Final flea market of cherry blossom season

Bonn · Cherry blossoms are coming to an end and the Altstadt will have it’s final flea market of the season on Saturday. The originally planned cherry blossom festival was cancelled due to resistance from local residents and businesses.

Residents of the Bonn Altstadt (Old Town) are putting on one final flea market at the end of the cherry blossom season. It will take place on Saturday, April 22 from 11 am until 5 pm, between Vorgebirgstraße and Kölnstraße, Adolf- and Breite Straße. During the month of April, there have already been many smaller events such as kids face painting, street concerts, readings, arts events and food tasting. In the meantime, most of the cherry blossoms have withered.

Organizers had originally planned to hold a big cherry blossom festival on April 23 with music and food and market stands on Heerstraße and Breite Straße. Local residents and businesses, however, collected 892 signatures to stop the festival. The concept for a big event was put to rest. An online survey from General Anzeiger showed that 70 percent of those who responded were against an expanded cherry blossom festival.

Reasons for the negative response were varied. There was criticism of “a lack of transparency on the part of organizers”, and comments on not enough chances and possibilities to help shape the event. Garbage was also a problem, not to mention the noise level brought on by thousands of visitors.

A private initiative resulted in the door to door flea market that will take place this weekend. A permit was granted by the city. Local politicians announced that they would observe the resulting flea market and possible traffic issues. This means the event on Saturday will be a sort of test. District mayor Helmut König says he has “no concerns” about the event and will be there himself on Saturday.
