The German leasing and charter flight operator WDL Aviation, which carried out the flight on behalf of BA, confirmed the error. The safety of the passengers was not at any point endangered. British Airways had initially reported via Twitter that the flight had been "diverted" to Edinburgh for unknown reasons. BA later announced that they had apologised to all passengers and would contact them individually. The plane flew from the Scottish city to Düsseldorf with a delay of about two and a half hours. Flight BA 3271 landed there at about 1 p.m., said a Düsseldorf airport spokesman.
One passenger complained via Twitter: "I don't think that anyone has booked a surprise trip here", the passenger wrote ironically. According to the BBC report, the pilot asked all passengers in Edinburgh to indicate whether they wanted to go to Düsseldorf and everyone raised their hands.
