Bonn festival Green Juice Festival turns into big mud party

Bonn · After Friday’s start was cancelled due to poor weather, the Green Juice Festival went ahead on Saturday with fans in good spirits despite the muddy conditions.

Around 5500 people celebrated the Green Juice Festival’s tenth birthday on Saturday. Clad in wellington boots, fans did not let the muddy conditions upset them as they enjoyed bands such as Milenia, the Hamburg party experts Le Fly and the headline act, Madsen. They danced in the mud and had a great time in the centre of Bonn-Vilich.

It was a lucky change in circumstances for the organisers, who had had to cancel the planned show by five bands at short notice the day before because it could not guarantee visitors’ safety. The venue was completely flooded and even rescue vehicles could not enter it.

Leonie Weller had planned to come on Friday. “Of course it was a shame,” she said. “We went to Bla, where Lygo played, but it was really full. There was also a big party in the Brückenforum, but we didn’t go to that.”

The organisers, brothers Simon and Julian Reininger, had originally planned the party for everyone who still wanted to listen to music after Friday’s concerts were over. They quickly made new arrangements for the event in the Brückenforum to take place earlier and persuaded all the bands to play at least a couple of songs in the hall.

“It showed once again what a great team we have,” said Julian Reininger. “Half of them came over with me, set up, served behind the bar and gave at least 2000 visitors a good evening, while my brother stayed here with around 20 men and worked away laying lava stone and flooring so that we could even be here today. I am absolutely delighted.”

The public agreed. “It’s really great what the boys have done here,” said Jonas Wehner. “Few event organisers would probably have managed to do both the party at the Brückenforum and the works at the site at the same time.” However, despite all efforts, Saturday’s event was still a mud pit. “Yes,” laughed Elias Wehner, “unfortunately you do sometimes get stuck when you jump and dance. But otherwise it’s great.”

Whether Green Juice will take place next year will depend on the scale of the losses from the cancellation. “We already have a date and we are keen,” said Reininger. You cannot ask for more than that.
