Germans eating fewer gummy bears Haribo domestic sales are down

BONN · 2018 was not a good year for Haribo - at least not here in Germany. The confectionary company hopes to offset the decline at home with sales abroad.

Haribo is apparently seeing a reduction in the number of sweets it is selling in Germany. The company said on Thursday, "We saw in the last year that the overall market is in decline. We are also affected by that." Haribo did not want to give any concrete figures. A German newspaper called “Lebensmittel-Zeitung”, which reports on the food industry, had previously reported a "dramatic decline in sales" at Haribo.

According to the Federal Association of the German Confectionery Industry (BDSI) based in Bonn, domestic sales of confectionery and snack foods rose by two percent last year to around eight billion euros. Exports increased by 1.5 percent to 7.9 billion euros.

Based on their own statements, it appears that Haribo wants to offset its decline in Germany by increasing sales abroad. “We now get more than 50 percent of our sales revenue from outside of Germany so we can more than compensate for the difficult situation in this market,” a company spokesman said.

Haribo moved to Grafschaft after decades in Bonn-Friesdorf. There was an upheaval in top management recently with Marketing Director Dennis Teeken leaving the company after only about 15 months.
