Timetable change at German Rail Here are the changes for rail traffic in the region

COLOGNE/BONN · It will be the biggest timetable change ever for German Rail. Beginning December 10, regional lines get a boost and more connections are offered in the evening. Here is an overview of changes in the region.

Come December 10, a new timetable will be in effect at German Rail (Deutsche Bahn or DB). The 33,000 kilometer train network is used by 40,000 passengers and freight trains daily, and this is the biggest timetable change in the history of DB. Here is an overview of the most important changes in the region:

“Bonn UN Campus station”

Night owls and partygoers should be pleased about the changed timetable, as they benefit from the numerous additional train connections on weekends and nights. For example, the late-night traffic on the RE 5 between Koblenz and Cologne - with stops at Bonn Central Station - will be expanded daily by two hours until 11 pm. In addition, the RE 5 line, like all lines of regional transport, will make a stop at the "Bonn UN Campus" station, which was opened at the beginning of November.

Not so pleasing for those in Oberwinter is that the RE 5 stop there will be almost completely eliminated beginning December 10. The weekday train at 6:45 am which goes to Cologne will remain.

RE 5 timetable between Cologne and Koblenz is very tight

When the timetable change is in effect, only the Mittelrheinbahn (RB 26) and the Ahrtalbahn (RB 30) will stop in Koblenz, and also on the weekends in Oberwinter - but there will be no stop in Rolandseck. Oberwinter has by far the lowest number of passengers and it is a district of Remagen, and having two stops in a relatively small city were difficult to justify, according to Thomas Nielsen, a transportation official from Rhineland Palatinate. “The timetable of the RE 5 between Cologne and Koblenz is extremely tight.”

The passengers of the RB 48, which operates between Bonn-Mehlem and Wuppertal-Oberbarmen, benefit from the timetable change. On Saturdays, the 30-minute intervals are extended by four hours until 9 pm. Additional weekend trips will be offered on the route of the RB 27 between Cologne and Rommerskirchen, and there will also be changes to the RB 38 line.

Public Transport Rheinland (NVR) says the train schedule for Cologne to Bedburg will remain unchanged, but passengers who want to continue on to or are coming from Grevenbroich, Neuss or Düsseldorf must change trains. The line RB 38 ends there and the stretch between Bedburg and Düsseldorf is covered by the new RB 39 line.

Tram traffic changes

When it comes to tram traffic (S-Bahn), there will be stops every 10 minutes beginning already at 1pm instead of 3:30pm on the S 6 towards Cologne-Worringen, the S 12 going to Horrem and the S 19 to Hennef. On Saturdays beginning December 12, Lines S 6, S 11, S 12, S 13 and S 19 will run every 20 minutes from 9 am to 8 pm. Previously, it was a 30-minute interval.

New on the timetable is a ride from Euskirchen to Bonn on the S 23 Saturdays and Sundays at 8am.

More for night owls and long distance travelers

Night owls will also benefit from a change on the tram lines. In the future, there will be additional times for the S 11, S 13 and S 19 lines on late nights and weekends.

German Rail is also using the timetable change to provide additional long-distance connections. New in NRW is the ICE 828 which leaves at 6:16pm evenings from Frankfurt and goes to Siegburg, Cologne / Bonn Airport and Cologne Messe / Deutz to Hamm. There will also be a direct connection between Dusseldorf and Luxembourg. Orig. text: Laszlo Scheuch Translation: Carol Kloeppel
