New regulations Here grilling is allowed in Bonn

Bonn · Grilling in public parks in Bonn is only allowed under certain circumstances. Here is an overview.

In March 2017 the City of Bonn decided to remove earlier restrictions on grilling in public places. The changes that were made in paragraph 3 of the civil law, do not mean that people are allowed to grill everywhere.

Grilling in public places is only allowed, for example, when it does not pose a risk to other people or the area, and when the “smoke, smell, and ashes do not disturb others” as it states in the new law paragraph. The exact regulations are determined by the district or township.

Fundamentally, grilling is only allowed when it is 100 meters away from the edge of a forest, the land of the neighbors is 20 meters away and the distance between your grill and the overlying tree canopy is greater than 2 meters. In addition, you may not leave your grill unattended. After you are finished grilling, the embers need to be completely put out and any garbage needs to be disposed of properly.

Grilling areas are usually clearly indicated with a sign. Starting a fire in nature is, however, illegal. This is especially relevant when the forest is a wildlife protection area. There is a fine of at least 25 Euros in NRW.

When grilling, only suitable grills should be used, which are high enough off of the ground so that the ground is not damaged and cannot catch fire. Furthermore, only standard barbecue lighters are allowed. Alcohol and other liquid barbecue lighters are not permitted. The grill must always be watched, and if there is a need to leave the grilling area, due to strong winds, etc., then the grill must be fully put out before leaving.

If one would rather grill at home or on their private terrace, there are also rules to follow. “At the end of the day, it depends on how high the cloud of smoke is,” according to Bernhard von Grünberg, Chairman of the German Renters Organization of Bonn/Rhein-Sieg/Ahr. “An electric grill, for example, causes less disturbances than a smoking charcoal grill,” he stated. The neighbors cannot feel disturbed by smoke or ashes in their own living space. The regulations on being quiet at night must also be observed.

It is generally advisable to talk to your neighbors about your grilling plans ahead of time, in order to avoid conflicts. Renters should also have a closer look at their rental agreement, because it is possible for landlords to forbid the renters from grilling on their balcony or in the garden, according to the Lawyers’ Organization of Bonn.

Those who choose not to follow these regulations may face warnings and fines, and even the immediate cancellation of the rental agreement, although this rarely happens. There are also similar regulations for homeowners – although no one can forbid them from grilling on their own property, they must also make sure that they are not disturbing their neighbors.

Basically, the lawyer from Bonn advises people to make sure that there are signs stating that grilling is allowed in an area, and to dispose of garbage properly. Whoever chooses to grill in their garden or on their balcony should make sure that it is allowed according to the rental agreement, and to only grill once a month. The regulations about being quiet at night should definitely be observed and ideally a gas or electric grill should be used.
