Restaurant tipp: „I Medici“ Italian art of living

From pistachio town Bronte in Sicily to Bonn: Charismatic „padrone“ Salvatore Luca (61) - for four decades already a successful gastronomer in Cologne - took over the Schlosshotel Kommende in Ramersdorf and the adjoining restaurant, which is now called „I Medici“ like the legendary Florentine dynasty.

A printed menu is not available here, only a daily changing, lucid black board. „40 years ago, people laughed at me for using the black board“, Luca remembers. His motto: „More is less. We are focusing on some few things, so we can do those really well.“

The feudal ambience of the castle’s restaurant where the culinary team under the leadership of Raimund Musar and Glicerio Biagio can accommodate 40 guests. They serve filled pasta with Ricotta, spinach and salmon in tomato oil and lemon skins (18 Euro), gratinated and shell-fish filled Scampi with herb crumbs (21 Euro) and a herb-filled gilt head in potato coat and baked on parchment paper (35 Euro), locket of roast saddle of venison with an almond crust on beetroot puree with Cumberland sauce (38 Euro) and as desserts, for example, pistachio tiramisù with strawberry sorbet (12 Euro).

Sicilian confectioner Maria Milazzo will join the team in the summer and create delicious Dolci like cakes, pies and petits fours. „We will set up a little laboratory for Maria, she is a real artist“, enthuses Luca.

On the wine menu, there are about 200 bottles listed, starting at 32 Euro, like the Pinot Blanc Schulthauser from St. Michael-Eppan (South Tyrol) for 35 Euro, the Grüner Veltliner from Clemens Strobly (Wagram, Austria) for 45 Euro or the Refosco dal Peduncolo from the Rodaro vineyard (Friaul) for 39 Euro. Six open wines (0.1l) cost 5.50 Euro each.

All the hotel rooms have been equipped with new boxspring beds - „so that our guests can sleep like royals“, explains Luca. For the small guests and visitors there will be a playground on the picturesque park grounds soon.
