Letter put in thousands of Bonn letterboxes "Letter to citizens" could have legal consequences

Bonn · An alleged letter to citizens from the city of Bonn caused a stir at the weekend. In it, the author called for resistance to the clearing of Hambach Forest. This could now have consequences.

The alleged letter to citizens from the city of Bonn, which landed in numerous letterboxes last weekend, could have legal consequences. The city administration made clear again on Monday that the “information about the upcoming clearing and deforestation of Hambach forest” was not a city publication. It is currently investigating whether to take legal action.

A letter headed “Bürgerbrief” (letter to citizens) landed in thousands of Bonn letterboxes on Saturday and appears to have been written by protesters against the clearing of Hambach Forest. The design was based on the official citizens’ letters from the city of Bonn. Among other things, it suggested that the city of Bonn was calling for resistance to the clearing and deforestation. “We appeal to you: actively and creatively organise resistance ,” read the letter, which was signed off with the words “Yours sincerely Bonn”.

City spokesperson Monika Hörig had already denied at the weekend that this was a city publication. As the city of Bonn issued this clarification, activists occupied a construction crane at Bonn’s main station on Sunday morning.
