Bonn City Ordnance Service Litter left after good weather weekend

The first warm spring weekend has barely hit the country, and promptly there is awell-known problem: The sun's rays have apparently lured even the litter sinners into the fresh air. The city of Bonn is adapting to this.

Shocked passers-by, who were out walking on Sunday afternoon, reported about a hopelessly filthy Rhine promenade. The city administration wants to ensure that this does not happen again soon. It announced on Tuesday that it would be strengthening the presence of the city order service again in the near future. The Rheinaue and the banks of the Rhine are particularly in focus."I haven't seen so much rubbish on a Rhine bank in my lifetime! A shame," says GA reader Erika Rindermann, describing her impression and reporting: "Between Alter Zoll and behind the Beethovenhalle, all the wastepaper baskets were filled to the top, and most of the stuff was lying around, under and beside the benches and walls. I was so ashamed of our beautiful Bonn! Even on weekends many people come from abroad."

Since Monday the city order service has changed over to the summer schedule again. That means: Thursday to Sunday until October the "Rhine patrol" is in charge and keeps an eye on any disturbance, wrongly parked cars and also the garbage sinners. For the latter the urban order guardians have a new penalty catalog at hand. Whoever throws food remainders and - packaging, beverage cans, cigarettes and other garbage simply on the road or leaves, must pay fines of 25 Euro and more. As far as the prevention and disposal of garbage in public is concerned, the municipal subsidiary Bonnorange is on the move. Also obviously adjusted to the summer season.

Not only garbage sinners are the problem

At any rate, the phenomenon is well known, as press spokesman Stefan Hülsdünker explains: Due to the "Mediterranean way of life", urban life is increasingly taking place outside, especially in summer. In the process, garbage, some of which is even brought along, is often simply left lying around. But it's not just waste sinners who are the problem: many people would obviously like to use a waste bin if it weren't already overflowing.

That was also to be observed on the past weekend, and also for this reason the urban cleaning enterprise commences:With thebeginning of summer time Bonnorange changed to the daily emptying and cleaning sinceMonday, at the Rhine and in the yard garden, said Hülsdünker on request of the GA.In principle, Bonnorange is „on duty 365 days a year". And the "highly frequented areas" such as the Rhine promenade and the courtyard garden would be cleaned daily throughout the summer. The pedestrian zone in Bonn will be cleaned until after business hours. According to the speaker, it is also one of the areas that are cleaned particularly often in Bonn - in addition to the shopping streets in Bad Godesberg, Beuel and Hardtberg as well as the parks including Rheinaue and Hofgarten.

The taxpayer pays

The announcement by Bonnorange boss Kornelia Hülter to install new and larger waste bins has been followed by deeds. The 100-litre containers already installed in the city centre will also beadded to the Rhine promenade. Containers of this size can cost several hundred Euro. Hülsdünker explains the responsibilities as follows: "Bonn orange and external companies are responsible for the waste containers in green areas, playgrounds and traffic green areas, even if they are set up by the Office for Urban Green“.

The Sports and Pool Authority has its own containers at its sports facilities. Therefore the citizens can be pleased about the increased use: The higher frequency of use also causes higher costs, depending on the time of day or day of the week. The cleaning of the streets and pedestrian zones is charged via the street cleaning fee (depending on the frequency of cleaning and the type and width of the street), the green areas and playgroundsthroughthe waste fees, which are generated by the levy. The taxpayer pays for both.
