Fatal accident at railway crossing in Bornheim-Hersel Man, 79, dies after being hit by tram

Bornheim · A train of the tram line 16 hit and killed an elderly man at a railway crossing in Bornheim-Hersel on Wednesday afternoon. The 79-year-old is said to have passed through a closed barrier.

The fatal accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon between the Hersel and Uedorf stops in Bornheim. According to first information, a 79-year-old man, who was on foot, was caught by a tram line 16 at about 12 noon crossing the level crossing Erftstraße/Elbestraße near the cemetery. Despite quick emergency medical care, he died at the scene of the accident, police reported in the afternoon.

According to GA information, the 79-year-old was on his way to a funeral service in the cemetery, attended by about 300 people. According to witnesses, the man passed an already closed half-barrier. In consultation with the public prosecutor's office in Bonn, the police took over the investigation and called in an expert to reconstruct the exact course of the accident.

According to SWB, the trams on line 16 continue to run only between Niehl Sebastianstraße and Wesseling or between Hersel and Bad Godesberg. In addition, buses will be used between Wesseling and Hersel. During the incident, the traffic was guided past the scene in one lane.
