The suspicion of coronavirus in a person returning from Italy to Cologne has not been substantiated. An examination has shown that the man is neither ill with the coronavirus nor with influenza, the city announced on Tuesday morning. The man had returned to Cologne from the Lombardy region of Italy, but it was not clear to the city that the region had been designated a Covid 19 risk area by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). He had complained of fever, as the city reported on Monday.

The RKI had not stated on its internet home page that Lombardy had been a "risk area" since Sunday - this information could only be found on a "subsequent internet page", according to the city of Cologne. Lombardy is the region in Italy most affected by the new coronavirus. In Lombardy, which is particularly badly affected, ten municipalities in the province of Lodi have been declared restricted zones. There, security forces control who is allowed in and out. On Monday, the authorities announced that five people had died in the region.
