24-year-old in critical condition Man plunges from Bonn parking garage while fleeing police

Bonn · While fleeing from the police, a 24-year-old fell from the railing of a parking garage on Kölnstraße in Bonn on Monday evening. The young man remains in critical condition.

A 24-year-old man fell from the top floor of the Stifts Parking Garage on Monday evening, suffering life-threatening injuries. The police said on Tuesday afternoon that the man had fallen from the railing of the parking garage on Kölnstraße. According to police, the man had jumped over the railing and was hanging on to it with both hands. They tried to keep him from falling, but he plunged 15 meters to the ground. He was taken to the hospital and as of Tuesday afternoon, he remained in critical condition.

At around 9:45 p.m., the police had been informed about a suspect who was looking at cars in the multi-level car park. Since parked cars had been damaged there in the previous days, two plain clothes police officers were dispatched to the car park immediately. They entered the parking garage separate from each other, making their way through the different levels, when one officer saw the suspect. The plain clothes police officer identified himself as a policeman and shouted to the man: "Stop! Police! Stop!" He then informed his fellow police officer of his location.

The suspect fled, running to the edge of the garage where there is a protective railing, and swung himself over it. According to the report, the officer had called out to the young man while he was running that he should climb back over the railing. When the officer reached him, he tried to hold onto the young man, but the 24-year-old plunged to the ground. An emergency doctor treated the injured man at the scene and he was then transported to hospital.

Several accidents in the Stifts Parking Garage

According to police, passers-by had seen the man hanging from the railing and the policeman trying to save him. On Tuesday, various people in the vicinity told GA that they had only become aware of the incident when the emergency doctor arrived. The operator of the private parking garage did not want to comment on the incident. Bonn police are in charge of the investigation. Police spokesman Robert Scholten said it was not considered necessary to hand over the case to other authorities. The public prosecutor's office had been informed.

It's not the first tragic event in this building. Three years ago, a 40-year-old had fallen from the top floor of the Stifts Parking Garage onto Kölnstraße, with numerous people having witnessed the incident. An emergency doctor resuscitated the man, who died shortly afterwards in a hospital. According to the Bonn police, there were no signs of third-party negligence.

In 2011, a 19-year-old let his 16-year-old girlfriend drive his car on the eighth floor of the parking deck. According to the investigators' findings, she probably mistook the accelerator pedal for the brake pedal. The car went through the barrier and plummeted. The man died at the scene of the accident, while the driver survived, having sustained serious injuries. The garage operator then had the side walls of the two upper parking decks reinforced with impact protection.
