On Tuesday evening, the school committee unanimously voted in favor of a proposal by the SPD to improve traffic safety in day care centers and schools. The city is to purchase up to 40 radar speed displays, so-called dialogue displays, for facilities located along busy roads over the next two years. They are to show drivers the speed at which they are driving on a display at points where dangerous situations repeatedly occur regarding children. So-called Smiley or Frowney signs should soon praise or discreetly rebuke drivers. Currently, a general speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour applies at daycare centers and schools in Bonn, usually for a limited period of time.

In its statement, the administration had reported that it was coordinating with the police. According to accident research by the insurers, conventional speed displays only led to a habituation effect. Dialogue displays would be more useful. This was confirmed by the politicians on the committee, who referred to positive experiences with the displays and their educational effect in neighboring countries. In numerous communities such as the Rhein-Sieg district, the devices are already in use in many cases. According to the administration, the Dialogue-Displays, which can be used regardless of location, cost 4000 Euro per unit. However, additional expenditures for the installation are to be expected. The administration will now carry out the corresponding tests and inform about the results.
