Advent season More Sunday shopping

Bonn · Another day of Sunday shopping is expected to be approved to coincide with Christmas market time, a popular draw especially for visitors from abroad.

Sunday shopping should come to Bonn one more time this year. Mayor Ashok Sridharan made an urgent decision in favor of the Sunday openings and this should now be approved by district authorities.

Stores in Bad Godesberg and Hardtberg are to open on Sunday, December 3, from 1 to 6 pm. In Bonn city, the stores are to open on the third Sunday of Advent, December 17 from 1 to 6 pm. The openings coincide with the Christmas and St. Nicholas markets which are not only traditional but also highly frequented events. In an explanation to support its decision in favor of the Sunday shopping, the administration wrote that the Christmas markets have been taken for granted for many years, but they are especially appreciated by visitors from other countries in the run-up to Christmas.

DGB and Verdi unions criticized the planned Sunday openings in December. A complaint filed by unions against Sunday shopping at the beginning of October had been dismissed in courts in Münster and Cologne.
