Professor Walter Bruchhausen was introduced on Wednesday as the new head of the Master’s degree program at the University of Bonn called "Global Health Risk Management and Hygiene Policies". At the same time, the first batch of students graduated from the program, earning a Masters of Science degree. "Professor Bruchhausen is recognized in Bonn; especially because of his research focusing on topics such as interculturality, he was our first choice for the post," said Wolfgang Holzgreve, Medical Director and Chairman of the UKB. "I have been working towards this new position for many years and I am very happy to continue to help shape the new course of study and to support committed young people in their further development," says Bruchhausen.

The 57-year-old physician and theologian was above all interested in a clear and accurate view of global health problems and possible solutions. The program is also a building block to further strengthen Bonn as an international city of science. "This also includes projects in development research and geographical disaster research," explained Bruchhausen. The international graduates, who come from countries such as Ethiopia, Egypt, Albania, Ghana and India, will receive further training in the program. Most of them have previously worked with infectious diseases in laboratories.

In the "Global Health" program, students are expected to gain further knowledge about "public health". The program covers a broad spectrum, explained Bruchhausen. "The students learn everything they need to know about health safety, so that they can use this in public service in the future. They should be able to recognize, prevent and manage epidemics.”

The nine Master’s degree candidates were not present at their graduation ceremony, but were able to follow the symbolic presentation of the degrees and diplomas in a livestream. Dean Bernd Weber read out their names. Graduate Abraham Kidane (35) from Ethiopia is very happy about his Master’s degree in Global Health. "With this degree, I will be able to contribute to the health and well-being of people in my home country in the future by applying the lessons learned during my studies in a local context," he said.

Tibebu Cherenet Kasaye (28), likewise from Ethiopia, is also grateful for the chance. "A single nation cannot live in a healthy way without the rest of the world. COVID -19 is a pandemic that has demonstrated the importance of this field of study. As a graduate, I am now committed to correcting the fragile health system in my country and continent," says Kasaye.
