On the peripherie of Europe Day on Saturday there was a brawl in front of the Old Town Hall in Bonn in which members of the NPD and the left-wing scene were involved. A 28-year-old had beaten a 22-year-old with a tripod. The police are still trying to find out exactly how the violence occurred. On Europe Day, countries, organisations, clubs and institutions presented themselves and campaigned for the European elections on May 26.
According to a spokesman for the Bonn police, the National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) had obtained the right to set up an election stand in front of the Old Town Hall at short notice. Members of the left-wing scene also noticed this and spontaneously announced a demonstration nearby. Thereupon about 50 people tried to disturb the stand and surrounded it with a banner. According to GA information they shouted slogans like "slain the Nazi plague".
In the course of this, a scuffle is said to have taken place during which the 22-year-old was attacked. The police intervened and separated the two conflict parties. The 28-year-old is now under investigation on suspicion of causing dangerous bodily harm.
