Anyone who might have to quick pick up some last minute items for the holiday dinner can consider themselves lucky this year: Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve each fall on a Tuesday. For the supermarkets in Bonn and the region, the same applies as for all supermarkets throughout Germany: they are allowed to open on Christmas Eve until 2 p.m. if the holiday falls on a working day. This is laid down by law. For New Year's Eve, on the other hand, unlike in some other German states, there is no uniform regulation in NRW: if December 31 falls on a working day, there are no restrictions on opening hours.

However, shoppers must expect supermarkets to be particularly crowded on these days, as many have to do their last purchases before the holidays. But what about the opening hours on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve in Bonn?

Netto: All Netto branches in Bonn are open from 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve and until 6 p.m. on New Year's Eve. Christina Stylianou, head of corporate communications at Netto provided the information to GA upon request.

Lidl: According to spokeswoman Sonja Kling, almost all Lidl branches open from 7 a.m. on both days. The exact opening hours depend on the respective closing times of which state they are located in. In Bonn that would mean 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve. Information on opening times is posted for customers at the individual branches. In addition, the opening times of all branches for Christmas and New Year's Eve will soon be available online on Lidl's website.

Kaufland: According to the legal regulations, all Kaufland branches are open on Christmas Eve from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.. The branch in Bonn-Tannenbusch, Oppelner Straße, will be open on New Year's Eve from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., a spokeswoman for the branch said.

Edeka: The Edeka stores are somewhat more confusing, as each market is managed by an independent operator. In Endenich and Hardtberg, Edeka Vogl is open on Christmas Eve from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. On New Year's Eve customers can shop there four hours longer - from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.. On Lievelingsweg and Bornheimer Straße, Edeka Mohr is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on New Year's Eve. Edeka Kipping in Beuel at Konrad-Adenauer-Platz is open on Christmas Eve from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on New Year's Eve from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Customers of the two markets Edeka Bachem in the Südstadt and in Endenich can shop on Christmas Eve from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on New Year's Eve from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., as a spokesperson told the GA.

Rewe: The opening hours may vary between the individual markets, according to spokeswoman Christiane Preis of the Rewe-Group. With regard to Bonn, however, the stores are generally open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve. On New Year's Eve, it is more variable, depending on the size of the supermarket, but the closing times usually fall between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to Preis. However, she does give the tip that customers should inform themselves about the individual opening times on the notice boards of the respective stores a few days before shopping.

Penny: The Penny markets, which also belong to the Rewe Group, are open on Christmas Eve from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on New Year's Eve from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., as the assistant of the regional management Eva Doherr informed the GA on inquiry. The only exceptions are the markets on Espeler Wiese and Frankenbad. Penny at Espeler Wiese is also open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve, but closes one hour earlier on New Year's Eve, at 5 p.m.. The market at the Frankenbad opens on Christmas Eve one hour later, at 8 a.m.. One can shop there as in the other markets also until 2 p.m.. New Year's Eve fireworks can be bought at the Frankenbad from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on December 31.

Aldi-Süd: The opening hours of the individual Aldi stores can be decided by each branch regionally, according to Tobias Neuhaus from the communications department in responding to a GA query. The majority of the locations open on Christmas Eve in the morning at the usual time (which also varies depending on the branch) and close at 1:30 pm. On New Year's Eve, Aldi stores will close earlier than usual: between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., depending on the location. Neuhaus says customers can find the current opening times for their location on the Aldi store finder: ALDI SÜD - Filialen und Öffnungszeiten
