Open Monuments Day 2017 Over 1100 sites to open to the public in NRW

Bonn · The theme of this September’s Open Monuments Day is power and splendour. More than 1100 historic sites and architectural gems will be open all over the region.

More than 1100 buildings of note will open in North Rhine-Westphalia for the Open Monuments Day on 10 September. This year’s theme is “power and splendour.” The German Foundation for Monument Protection in Bonn said the theme referred to buildings with secular and religious power such as castles, powerful churches, patricians’ houses or large historic factory buildings. The Open Monuments Day has taken place throughout Germany since 1993. Last year it attracted several hundred thousand visitors in NRW. Experts or owners often offer tours.

In Bonn, the around 300-year-old Hofgarten will be an example of power plays. Initially, the prince-elector strolled here and during the Bonn Republic, demonstrators protested against the build up of arms. In Havixbeck, in the Münster region, those interested can take a bike tour to magnificent farms. Cologne will offer a tour of the Heumarkt, where the imposing equestrian statue of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm is a favourite meeting spot. The NRW Justice Ministry in Düsseldorf will also be open to visitors, but only if they pre-register. The Pax-Christi Church in Essen is open as a memorial for victims of violence.
