Traffic accident at Mehlem Pedestrian hit but who was driving?

Mehlem · Police are still establishing who was driving a car that hit and seriously injured a pedestrian near Mehlem station early Monday morning.

A pedestrian suffered severe injuries on Monday morning when he was hit by a car around 6.50am in Mehlem. The 45-year-old was crossing at a traffic light from Mainzer Straße towards Mehlem train station when he was hit by a car driving towards Bad Godesberg.

The man was flung onto the ground and seriously injured in the collision. He was driven to hospital after first being treated at the scene by an emergency doctor.

It was first thought a 52-year-old woman was at the wheel of the car involved in the accident. However, police said during the morning that after further inquiries there were various reasons for thinking a 32-year-old man and not the 52-year-old woman may have been driving the car. Investigations revealed that an arrest warrant had been issued against the man. The police took the 32-year-old into custody. They also secured the car and outer garments and mobile phones belonging to the two occupants as evidence.

The transport police have taken over the investigations to reconstruct the exact circumstances of the accident. They will also examine how the traffic lights for pedestrians and drivers were operating at the time of the accident.

Several kilometres of traffic built up on the B9 in the morning and the road was completely closed heading towards Bonn while the accident was recorded.
