Nirvan means something like "light in the heart" in Persian. Owner and chef Darius Seidi, born in Tehran, opened a restaurant called Nirvan in Stuttgart in 1990. In 1998 he moved to Cologne. Now Seidi has arrived in Bonn with his Persian restaurant on the premises of the former Take Two establishment on the corner of Belderberg/Rathausgasse. "About 60 percent of my regular guests always came from Bonn," Seidi explains.

After two months of renovation, the restaurant reveals a splendid oriental ambience, free of kitsch, with artistic lamps, mirrors, Persian oil paintings and elaborately crafted dining tables. The Nirvan offers space for 60 guests, and 30 more on the terrace in the Rathausgasse. A pianist entertains the guests every Thursday and Sunday evening (from 6 pm).

Seidi learned how to prepare Persian specialities from his parents, who both worked as cooks. He recommends "Kaschke Bademjan" (fried aubergines with traditional yoghurt, mint fried onions and Persian lava bread) for 6.50 euros as a warm starter, and "Panir Tond" (spicy soft cheese cubes in garlic and herbs) for 5.50 euros as a cold starter. The main courses include "Soltani" (minced meat and lamb skewer with grilled tomato and saffron rice) for 16.90 euros and "Djudje Kabab Filet" (grilled chicken breast pieces in saffron marinade with grilled tomato and saffron rice) for 12.90 euros. As a braised dish Seidi recommends "Gheime Bademjan" (fried eggplants with lamb in tomato-lime sauce with yellow lentils and saffron rice) for 11,90 euros. A dessert tip is "Falude" (glass noodle ice cream in rose water and lime juice) for 4.90 euros.

The drinks menu offers "Dough", Persian Ayran with mint (0.375l for 3.90 euros), Persian black tea (cup 1.90 euros) and four open wines (0.2l) for 6.90 euros each, such as Wolfgang Pfaffmann's Pinot Gris. Gaffel Kölsch and Bitburger Pils come in 0.33 litre bottles (3.30 euros each).

Nirvan is located at Rathausgasse 15 in Bonn inner city. Telephone: (0228) 38 76 76 05. Open Monday through Friday from 12 noon until 11 pm, Saturday 12 until midnight and Sunday from 12 until 10 pm.
