Lows of minus 20 Polar air from the northeast: Cold spell approaches Germany

OFFENBACH · It will get bitterly cold on the weekend. Lows of minus 20 degrees are expected in some areas. And the German Weather Service predicts it will stay frosty for awhile.

Coming soon: Polar air and a cutting northeast wind. A strong cold snap is expected in Germany this weekend.

Meteorologists from the German Weather Service (DWD) say frost is in store for the coming nights. Even during the day there is a permanent frost nearly everywhere - “and it feels much colder than it is” said a DWD meteorologist this Wednesday in Offenbach.

It will still be sunny in Bonn and the surrounding region until the new week comes, and temperatures during the day will initially remain above zero. The cold wave hits the Rhineland on Sunday and Monday, when temperatures will not climb above freezing point during the day. At night, temperatures as low as minus ten degrees are expected.

The reason for the impending cold spell is a strong current from the north and northeast, which brings bitter air from Finland, Sweden and Russia to Germany - with Wednesday morning temperatures reading between minus ten and minus 20 degrees. "This cold air is on its way to Central Europe and will arrive on the weekend."

It is expected to remain chilly until at least Thursday of next week, according to DWD. Some models even predict a longer cold spell. That’s because the current weather situation over Europe is relatively stable, explained the meteorologist. In 2013 there was a similar phenomenon - with the result that it remained frosty cold in Germany until March.

However, there is a ray of hope: The cloudy weather of the past few weeks seems to be over for now. Apart from the Baltic coast and the Alps, it should be usually sunny.
