Charges top 1,000 Prosecutors in Cologne on New Year’s Eve charges

Cologne · At least 1,000 women have filed charges in the attacks that took place in Cologne on New Year’s Eve. 44 men are being investigated.

Public prosecutor, Benedikt Kortz said on Friday that of the 1,000 charges filed after the events of New Year’s Eve, 433 of them involved charges of a sexual nature. He added that another man is in custody. The Algerian is charged with theft and resisting police. This brings the total of men that police are investigating to 44 with ten of them already in police custody.

On New Year’s Eve near the Cologne Hauptbahnhof (central train station), women were assaulted and stolen from on a massive scale. Women have been coming to police to give their accounts and press charges in the weeks following the attacks. Investigations, however are difficult and the majority of those in custody have not been charged with crimes of a sexual nature.
