Signal for democracy and diversity Rainbow flag to wave for first time at Bonn’s Old Town Hall

Bonn · The Christopher Street Day festival takes place this Saturday in Bonn. In a nod to democracy and diversity, the city will fly a rainbow flag outside Bonn’s Old Town Hall for the first time.

This weekend, a rainbow flag will wave in front of the Old Town Hall in Bonn for the first time ever. It will be raised as a sign of solidarity for the Bonn Christopher Street Day weekend. It is the fourth time that the Bonn club "r (h) einqueer" organizes the traditional gay and lesbian summer party on the Münsterplatz. The festival on Saturday, August 4, is the culmination of a whole week of activities on the LGBT scene of Bonn and the region.

In the past couple of years, rainbow flags were flown in front of the city administration building in connection with the event. After the city council made a change in the flag regulations this year, the rainbow flag can now be hoisted in front of Bonn’s Old Town Hall. Bonn city council member Katja Dörner explains, “I am glad that the rainbow flag can fly in the middle of the city. It is a sign of democracy and diversity. I thank the mayor of Bonn for sending this political signal.”

Bonn City Council member Tim Achtermeyer adds: "Bonn is diverse. I am glad that we send a clear signal as a city. Especially in these times of increased exclusion and isolation, it is particularly important to set clear lines. But marks of diversity do not happen by themselves. The waving of the flag is also an expression of the appreciation of the city for this commitment (to diversity), as, for example, the club "r (h) einqueer" demonstrates through the organization of this week. For that, they deserve great respect. "
