ZeroHungerRun in Bonn Rheinaue charity run a huge success

Bonn · More than 1300 people headed to the start line of the ZeroHungerRun to run for a good cause in the Rheinaue on Sunday. Several celebrities also joined the run organised by Welthungerhilfe (World Hunger Aid).

The starting gun was working during a practice, but when actress Gesine Cukrowski wanted to send participants in Welthungerhilfe’s five kilometre Rheinaue ZeroHungerRun on their way, it did not go off. It was a small hiccup in an otherwise very successful event, with much higher participant numbers than anticipated.

Everything worked: the weather, the atmosphere and the reason for the event. The plan by the United Nations to have a world with no, or “Zero” hunger by 2030, gave the aid organisation the idea that a charity run could be the first step. It organised a five and ten kilometre race through the Rheinaue, secured the patronage of Mayor Ashok Sridharan and motivated several celebrities, including, alongside Cukrowski, the singer Lucy Diakovska and presenter Florian Ambrosius.

100 per cent of the registration fee went towards work against world hunger. The cause motivated 1115 people to sign up. More than 200 joined on the day. It was a huge success for the organisers who had been anticipating around 500 runners for the first such run. Singer Lucy Diakovska (No Angels), who has worked with the organisation for years, thinks it could turn into something more: “`If so much can be achieved by simply running, I anticipate that 5000 people will join the next ZeroHungerRun.”
