Health authorities recommend immunization Several cases of measles in Bonn

Bonn/Region · For the first time in a year, there are again several cases of measles in Bonn. The report comes from the city health department and authorities there advise people to have their vaccinations refreshed. In Cologne, there are also an unusual amount of cases.

In Bonn, several people have already contracted measles this year. The city health department released the information in a press release on Wednesday. While no cases were registered last year, three people are currently affected. In light of that, the health department urges people to check on whether or not their measles vaccine is up to date, and if not, to have it refreshed.

People who have not been vaccinated could easily become infected with measles by coming into contact with droplets (via cough or sneeze) from an infected person nearby. The nasty thing about it is that measles are contagious for five days before the rash occurs, and for four days after that. Measles usually start with a sudden, high fever, a cough and runny nose. Within a few days, a rash forms on the face and behind the ears and then spreads to the entire body.

Bonn health authorities emphasize that measles is not a harmless childhood disease and that it can lead to serious complications. Especially for adults who have not had measles, have been vaccinated only once or not at all, they are strongly advised to have two vaccinations at intervals of four weeks. These vaccinations are necessary to be fully protected.

In Cologne, there have been twice as many cases of measles this year in the same time period as last year. According to city health authorities, there have been 16 confirmed reports since the beginning of the year, six of them at the beginning of April. They affected both adults and children.
